Lac de Villefort

Villefort Lake

This 127-hectare water body with a capacity of 35.6 million cubic meters is due to an artificial containment of the Villefort Dam (192 meters long and 71.5 meters high). Its construction began in 1956 and the impoundment took place in 1964, immersing the Bayard Valley and forcing some twenty families to leave their homes.

This water reservoir is primarily used for electricity generation (the hydropower plant is located in Pied de Borne) which explains the variations in water levels throughout the year. When the level is low (before the heavy rains of autumn and spring), you may have the chance to see some remains buried under the water like a bridge of the nineteenth century, called Pont Louis Philippe, which was not destroyed during impoundment.
